Craft Ideas, Shopping List and How-To for these LGBTQ+ Book Crafts!

Craft Idea for “And Tango Makes Three”

“And Tango Makes Three” by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell: Create your own penguin puppet using a paper bag and some felt. Have your child decorate the puppet with paint or markers and use it to act out the story.

“And Tango Makes Three” Craft Shopping List:

  1. Construction paper (red, orange, yellow)
  2. Scissors
  3. Glue
  4. Markers or crayons

“And Tango Makes Three” Craft How-To:

Materials:

  • 2 white paper plates
  • Black and orange construction paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Wiggle eyes

Step 1: Cut one of the paper plates in half to create the penguin’s head and body.

Step 2: Cut two small circles out of the black construction paper and glue them onto the top of the penguin’s head to create the eyes. Then, add wiggle eyes to the circles.

Step 3: Cut a small triangle out of the orange construction paper and glue it onto the penguin’s head to create the beak.

Step 4: Cut two small circles out of the black construction paper and glue them onto the penguin’s body to create the penguin’s feet.

Step 5: Cut out two small wings from the black construction paper and glue them onto the penguin’s body.

Step 6: Take the second paper plate and cut it into a large circle. Glue this circle onto the back of the penguin’s body to create the penguin’s tuxedo.

Step 7: Allow the glue to dry completely before displaying your paper plate penguin!

Craft Idea for “Stella Brings the Family”

“Stella Brings the Family” by Miriam B. Schiffer: Create your own family tree using construction paper and markers. Have your child draw pictures of their family members and add them to the tree.

Materials:

Step 5: Cut out a stem and leaves from green construction paper and glue them to the back of the flower.

Craft Idea for “The Family Book”

“The Family Book” by Todd Parr: Create your own family book using a blank notebook and some markers or crayons. Have your child illustrate different types of families, including LGBTQ+ families, and write a short story to go along with each picture.

Step 1: Cut out a large tree shape from brown construction paper.

Step 2: Cut out different size circles from the construction paper in various colors.

Step 3: Glue the circles onto the tree shape to represent the different members of your family.

Step 4: Place the photos of family members on top of the circles.

Step 5: Use markers to write the names of family members next to the corresponding photo or circle.

Step 6: Display your family tree collage and cherish the love within your family.

Craft Idea for “Love Makes a Family”

“Love Makes a Family” by Sophie Beer: Create your own rainbow garland using construction paper and yarn. Have your child cut out different colored hearts and string them together to represent the different types of love in the story.

“Love Makes a Family” Craft Shopping List:

  1. Construction paper (red, pink, purple)
  2. Scissors
  3. Glue
  4. Markers or crayons

Love Makes a Family Craft How-To:

Step 1: Gather materials. You will need:

  • Clear plastic ornaments (can be found at most craft stores)
  • Small pieces of tissue paper in various colors
  • Scissors
  • Glue or glue dots
  • String or ribbon for hanging

Step 2: Cut the tissue paper into small pieces, about the size of a dime.

Step 3: Carefully remove the top of the clear ornament and set it aside.

Step 4: Begin placing the tissue paper pieces inside the ornament, filling it up to about 2/3 of the way. Be sure to mix and match the colors for a more visually interesting suncatcher.

Step 5: Once the ornament is filled to your liking, replace the top of the ornament and secure it in place.

Step 6: Tie a string or ribbon to the top loop of the ornament for hanging.

Step 7: Hang your new Heart Suncatcher in a sunny window and enjoy the beautiful colors as the light shines through!

Craft Idea for “Princess Princess Ever After”

“Princess Princess Ever After” by Katie O’Neill: Create your own crown using a paper plate and some glitter or sequins. Have your child decorate the crown and use it to act out the story of the princesses finding their happily ever after.

“Princess Princess Ever After” How-To:

Materials needed:

  • Paper plate
  • Scissors
  • Glitter or sequins
  • Glue
  • Optional: feathers, beads, or other decorations

Step 1: Cut the paper plate in half, then cut the edges to create a pointed shape.

Step 2: Use the glue to attach glitter or sequins to the paper plate.

Step 3: Optional: You can also add feathers, beads or any other decorations to make the crown more visually appealing.

Step 4: Once the glue is dry, you can use a piece of string or ribbon to tie the crown on.

Step 5: Encourage your child to act out the story of the princesses finding their happily ever after, while wearing the crown they created.
