PBS Kids Games and Digital Literacy | Geek Mom World

Hey there, fellow parents! Tommi here, the blogger behind “Geek Mom World” and today I’ll be sharing my thoughts on PBS Kids games, gaming and why topics like this are important for kids in today’s world.

First off, let me just say that gaming is not just a fun pastime for kids, it has become an essential tool for learning and development. PBS Kids has been a champion for advocating gaming and play as a way to support children’s learning and development. The interactive and engaging nature of games can help children to develop important skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity.

PBS Kids Games and Digital Literacy

As parents, we can use gaming and video games as a positive learning activity for our kids. PBS Kids games are specifically designed to teach children valuable skills such as literacy, math, and science in a fun and engaging way. By encouraging our kids to play these games, we can help them develop important skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

However, many parents have concerns about gaming for kids, such as addiction, exposure to inappropriate content, and lack of physical activity. While these are valid concerns, it is important to remember that with the right guidance and support, our kids can learn to play games in a safe and healthy way. It’s always up to us to make sure our kids are safe on and offline, and now in the virtual and digital world. So here are some bullet points to keep in mind when it comes to healthy gaming for kids:

  • Setting clear boundaries and guidelines for how much time your child can spend playing games.
  • Monitoring the games your child is playing to ensure they are age-appropriate and safe.
  • Encouraging a balance between gaming and other activities, such as physical activity, homework, and spending time with family.
  • Playing games with your kids to bond and monitor their gaming habits.
  • Educating children on responsible and safe gaming habits.

It’s important to note that technology and gaming is a super important part of the world today and it’s vital for kids to learn how to use and navigate it at an early age. Everything is super digital these days so it’s essential for their future as they will be interacting and using technology in many aspects of their lives. It also promotes digital literacy which is something “Geek Mom World” will be heavily focused on at All Ages of Geek.

But what exactly is digital literacy and why is it so important for our kids to learn?

In simple terms, digital literacy refers to the ability to use, understand, and create technology in a responsible and safe manner. It involves not just the ability to use technology but also understanding how it works and how to create and share content.

For children growing up in today’s world, digital literacy is becoming increasingly important. Technology is part of their daily lives and it’s essential for them to learn how to use it safely and responsibly. Digital literacy skills are also important for their future careers, so parents please keep that in mind!

As parents, it’s our responsibility to provide our children with the necessary tools and resources to develop these digital literacy skills. This can include teaching them how to use technology safely, how to create and share content, and how to identify and avoid online risks such as cyberbullying and exposure to inappropriate content. Many apps and even Google Extensions provide these things which will also be included in Geek Mom World as a free resource.

These skills are important for the 21st century and even before the digital boom, PBS Kids has been a champion in this aspect. Here are some ways how PBS Kids has changed the way we view gaming:

  • PBS Kids games are specifically designed to teach children valuable skills such as literacy, math, and science in a fun and engaging way.
  • PBS Kids games are carefully curated to ensure that they are safe and appropriate for their intended audience.
  • PBS Kids games promote digital literacy and skills that are important for the 21st century.
  • PBS Kids has been a champion for advocating gaming and play as a way to support children’s learning and development.
  • PBS Kids provides resources and guidance for parents to ensure that gaming remains a healthy and positive part of children’s lives..

While some may disagree, gaming is an essential tool for learning and development, and PBS Kids games are a fantastic way for children to have fun while learning. As parents, we can use gaming and video games as a positive learning activity for our kids. It’s important to remember that with the right guidance and support, kids can learn to play games in a safe and healthy way.
