We had the pleasure of interviewing the team behind SCP:GALLIONIC an animated short set in the SCP universe following a breach and the effects it has on two siblings working within. Can you tell us about SCP:GALLIONIC

SCP:GALLIONIC is a story about two siblings: the brother, an accountant working on the outskirts of the SCP facility, and the sister, a researcher working in said place. Both find themselves at opposite ends of a catastrophic containment breach, and we follow the two timelines as one tries to prevent the breach, and the other descends into the facility to rescue his sister after said breach.

This project has now been in the works for over two years now, and we are extremely excited to finally share it to the world!

What inspired the story?

For starters… SCP of course! We went through a lot of ideas, different stories, and perspectives. But what eventually became this story and what inspired it was the feelings we got while first reading and watching videos about SCP. Lovecraftian would be the best way to describe that: the inability to describe one’s surroundings or experiences, giving off a sense of the surreal is what drew both of us first to SCP.

Of course SCP wasn’t the only source of inspiration we had: Dante’s Inferno finds its ways into this story through references and thematic parallels. Annihilation’s movie by Alex Garland was also very influential in a lot of our decision making. Last but not least, our own lives and experiences: afterall, this is a fairly personal story for us, not that we talk about events that happened to us, but in that it takes on subject matters which are dear to our hearts.

What advice would you give to new story tellers and animators?

Trust the process. Writing was where we had to grow the most, being animators first and foremost, and not writers. So I learned through applying drawing principles to writing. As example: Writing a story is the same process as making an illustration. Your first draft is to find out, is this an interesting idea, do I have something here?

This is essentially the same as sketching thumbnails. If you hit on an idea that you like, then you start making it good. We have around 6 drafts of this short written, improving it draft by draft. For us it was around the 4th-5th draft when we really started to add all the character personalities, themes..ect in. If the idea is good, then you just have to trust the process, because it really is a process. The longer you work on a drawing and let your eyes rest from it, the more flaws you see and can fix. This luckily for us, goes even faster when you have a partner to bounce off from.

What can folks expect to see in your kickstarter or after launch?

Other than the cool trailer,  we’re going to keep making content on the side. We’ll talk more about the animation side of making something of this quality, show more behind the scenes and other things! We want to take you all along with us on the journey, because this will only be possible with your support.

Tell us Soem Studios goals

Right now it’s the Funding of our short movie SCP:GALLIONIC, we really want to show everyone our story and the world we created in this SCP Story. After finishing the film we would love to show this in Film festivals, especially Annecy. The chance to show anything SCP on one of the biggest stages in the world would be a dream come true.

Where can folks support your work?

Our Kickstarter for SCP:GALLIONIC is running from February 17th – March 27th, of course we understand that not everyone can donate. So you can always go to any of our socials like Youtube, Instagram, Twitter or Tiktok and share this project around with as many people as possible!
