Now let’s get into the interview with Raine Leggett

1. What inspires your work?

My work is always from my dreams. I am a daydreamer. As a child I often dreamed to my favorite stories. Putting character in my own scenarios and just playing with them. It was a way to unwind, pass time, and just re-experience my favorite tales. As I got older more of my original characters would take over. It was a load of fun but not without consequences. I got sort of hulled up in my dreams by 5th grade. They were almost addicting. I stopped doing work to dream. It kicked my butt pretty hard and I got D’s for the quarter. My teacher pulled me aside and straightened me out. I began to enjoy more responsibly. By the time I was in high school however I would lose my fight to Schizophrenia and have to leave school. By then I was swimming in negative emotion. I went to anime and manga more heavily in my life then I ever had. It became heavy inspiration of my future work. Story took my mind off of things and I would simply enjoy myself. I write story for comfort and enjoyment. As dreaming kept me sane, writing kept it productive. I am a writer to entertain for whoever wants it or needs it.

2. Advice for new writers?

Just do it. Write your ideas and let it flow. Putting it down first is important. If you worry too much in the beginning, it could be overwhelming and long. Once it is down reading can help you write better. How it’s written can be a strong part of a story, too. Finding a voice and letting it read well is important. I used to be repetitive in my writing. That was fixed when I was in writing class and a classmate was like, “No ma’am! No ma’am!” It kicked my butt and my papers butt pretty hard. I started reading and thinking about how I say things. For example, instead of: “She waited to herself practically bouncing in excitement. It was so exciting.” I write: “She was waiting to herself practically bouncing. It was so exciting.”

3. Goals for next year?

I plan to make a series out of my book East Sol. I want to have at least four other books written as well.. As for personal goals I want to get a job in the field of accounting. I have had jobs before but my lack of confidence even though I have a associates in accounting made me avoid it. Plus I wanted to give writing a shot first. Money calls however and a upgrade from mom’s house is in order.

4. What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on my series East Sol. The goal is five books. I’ve mapped it pretty well and I have been dreaming about it since 2018. It is my biggest project at the moment. I want the series to continue to follow Mimi and Rochel. More specifically their endeavors as the queens of East Sol. It is a lot of fun. I also am working on four single title books. I have many more ideas and chapters written. Narrowing it down to four and East Sol was hard but it is so worth it. Please look forward to reading them one day.

5. Biggest success story?

My biggest success stories are graduating Savannah Technical College and winning Second place in the PTA reflection writing contest in state and county. I was in 1st grade when I wrote a piece called Crazy Stars. It was a story about stars falling to earth and causing mischief. My teacher was so proud of the story she told my mother to make sure I entered. When I won, I cried so hard all I saw was water. I graduated from technical college in 2016. It was something I never though I could do. Especially with having endured schizophrenia. I made it through reading and music to keep my calm and focused.
