We Interviewed Moirai Myths

We Interviewed Moirai Myths all about their work!

1. What inspires your work?

We’re big fans of mythology, so there was no doubt in our minds that our games would be driven by a desire to highlight these ancient stories. Myths and folklore are an endless well of creative potential and world-building opportunities, and there are so many obscure, little-known tales out there to take inspiration from. This love of mythology is in part why we’re called Moirai Myths: It’s a reference to the three Fates, or Moirai, of Greek mythology; figures tasked with spinning, weaving, and ending the intricate lives of mortal beings. The Fates are, in this sense, storytellers, and since Moirai Myths was initially co-founded by three persons, it felt appropriate to choose this name.

2. Tell us about your Indie Visual Novels?

The Moirai Myths team is presently working on our first visual novel, The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe), which features two men, two women, and two non-binary folk as romance options. It is a lore-rich and choice-driven visual novel inspired by Celtic folklore and Irish myths. You play as an Irish tenant farmer from the mid-19th century, whose path becomes inexplicably entwined with fairy affairs after getting robbed and lured into the mythic and war-torn world of Tír na nÓg: A once unified land, now divided into the Seelie and Unseelie Courts. The goal is to escape the Otherworld with your stolen valuables, but who knows? Maybe fate, or your heart, has something else in mind…

3. What are you most proud of in your work?

The entire team has worked incredibly hard to put this project together, and in the grand scheme of things, we haven’t been in development for particularly long either! While about two years of conceptual planning went into this project, we started working on the demo itself last fall (2021). This means that in less than a year, our six-person team, who were all either in school or full-time employment, has managed to put together this visually stunning, 50,000-word demo. Regardless of what the future holds for Moirai Myths, we couldn’t be happier with what we’ve done so far!

4. Plans for 2023?

Following the release of our demo on August 1, we’re going to begin working on our Kickstarter campaign, which we hope to launch later this year. As is the case with many Kickstarter-backed projects, the scope and scale of our game going forward will be highly dependent on the funds we have access to, thus it is difficult to say what our 2023 will look like. Still, our team is ambitious, so it is our hope that we will get our project fully funded and our vision fully realized.

5. What advice would you give to someone who wants to do what you do?

5. Our suggestion is to just go for it. Take your time to figure out what you want to do with your game and just get started. The visual novel space is a slightly newer market to western audiences, so playing a lot of otome helps you to understand how to use the format, and to understand its history and ties to Japanese culture. Reading and writing are how we started, and it helped us understand what we want from our game. Also, write what you enjoy, not what you think people want.

6. Where can folks support your work?

We recently went live on Steam, so if you want to support our game, please wishlist it! It’ll not only help us get more eyes on our game, but it’ll also make sure that you’ll be the first one to know when our demo goes live August 1! You can also visit our website or social media accounts for more information about our story, characters, and world-building. We answer a lot of questions on Tumblr, so feel free to make enquiries!
