Hey! Emily here with another Yaoi Review. This time we need to discuss WEBTOON having some amazing Boys Love series! It’s a good fix for anyone craving Yaoi reads but wanting to support independent creators. But before we dive into the good stuff, let’s talk about “Boyfriends” and why the series is one WEBTOON constantly promotes but overrides all the other BL on the platform. Unfortunately, this series is not only toxic for the LGBTQ+ community, but it also perpetuates harmful stereotypes and does not accurately represent healthy same-sex relationships. So, let’s steer clear of that one (review coming soon).
Now, onto the good stuff! “I Married a Monster on a Hill” is a series I’m going to be a paparazzi over since it’s my job here at All Ages of Geek to let you know about the IMMH news and reviews. As someone who has been writing and reading digital comics for years even in the early stages of WEBTOON, this platform is definitely one I love to frequent. It offers a wide variety of comics, including webtoons, manga, and graphic novels, and it’s free to use. One of the things that makes WEBTOON unique is its focus on webtoons, which are comics that are originally created and published online. This means that the platform is home to a lot of unique and diverse content that you won’t find anywhere else.I It’s also super easy to go and support independent creators there!
One of the biggest pros of WEBTOON is the variety of comics available. The platform offers a wide range of genres, including action, fantasy, romance, comedy, and more. This makes it easy to find something that interests you, in seconds. Literally! The site has people publishing new work at like every hour of the day.
Another pro of WEBTOON is that it’s free to use. You can read comics on the platform without having to pay anything. And it also has a user-friendly interface, making it easy to navigate and find new comics to read.
However, like every, single platform in the world, WEBTOON does have its cons. One of the biggest complaints from users is the inconsistent update schedule of some comics. Some comics are updated regularly, while others may go months without an update. This can be frustrating for readers who are invested in a particular series. This usually is the creators’ issue to handle. Though, if WEBTOON were to add something extra to the site to encourage people to update schedules, this may help readers and creators alike.
Another issue that some users have with WEBTOON is the lack of control over the quality of comics. Anyone can upload their comics to the platform, regardless of the comic’s focus. While this means that there’s a lot of unique and diverse content available, it can also mean that there’s a lot of comics that aren’t properly tagged, can be super offensive to some, or just have issues with targeting the right audience.
Users have also complained consistently over WEBTOON Originals. While the Originals are amazing to support, there are a few things people have noticed which makes them leave the platform.
- The Originals like NY Times Best-Selling Novels are always pushed above anything else. It makes sense. They earned it, but this also dilutes the discovery of new comics.
- The section makes it extremely challenging for someone to become an Original. Also makes sense. You don’t want to take on everyone. But there have been some creators who have shown such dedication to WEBTOON, have a massive following and also have done almost everything right and they still aren’t on the list.
- Not enough promotion for new titles. WEBTOON has grown worldwide over the years and has skyrocketed. Also makes sense why not every title can be supported daily. It’s really up to the creators to update their fans, grow on social media and be their own marketing team. I disagree with this complaint because even WEBTOON gives free courses for everyone to use on their platform and YouTube Channel. But its like any social media. Beating the algorithm.
Overall, WEBTOON is a great platform for digital comics. It offers a wide variety of comics, many of which are unique and created by independent creators. And the Boys Love is always updating! It’s free to use, with a user-friendly interface. As a regular user of the site, I still think it’s worth checking out and finding comics that you love. Heck, go and create your own too while you’re at it!
Why should you read “I Married a Monster on a Hill” on WEBTOON?
We’ve discussed this before in the Junjou Romantica Yaoi Review, but I’ll say it again. “I Married a Monster on a Hill” are cute stories about daily married life between several couples. But it’s not just about romance. It’s like taking a Slice-of-Life anime where all the characters are in relationships in high school, but telling their after stories. Not Clannad: After Story (oh my God no), but making the characters older, dealing with everyday struggles, and just enjoying life.
Not only are all the voice actors themselves members of the LGBTQ+ community, who voice the LGBTQ+ characters, but the series also accurately and respectfully represents same-sex relationships. It’s so refreshing to see a Boys Love story that isn’t just some straight girl’s fantasy, but rather a realistic portrayal of two men falling in love and building a life together.
It’s a great story for anyone who just wants a smile. The characters who are gay and just gay but that’s not their whole entire characters. Just like the characters who are straight, are straight. It’s a must-read for anyone who loves Boys Love and wants to see a well-written, authentic representation of same-sex relationships (or just cute ships in general).
So, if you’re a fan of digital comics and Boys Love, WEBTOON is definitely worth checking out. It’s a great platform for independent creators and a great way to discover new and exciting comics.
