What inspired you to become an actor?
I didn’t take the traditional route of going to drama school so acting technically came to me a bit later on in life. Although saying that, I was cast as Mary during a school nativity and the teacher said I was a natural, so maybe that’s where it started? I’ve always done little bits of acting when filming music videos or being in short films for my friends but the main inspiration for me has always been because I love storytelling. I trained originally as a songwriter/musician so portraying emotions through lyrics and melody is where I believe it started. I also play D&D and this is a great escape from the real world. We are a heavy role playing table so having that freedom to express what your character would do is so much fun. I think the pandemic really hit home as to what I wanted to do as I was working full time in a corporate office but I was put on furlough.
Music had always been a side hustle and never a main profession at this point. I couldn’t go and perform live music anywhere as venues were closed so I had to really think about how I was going to survive creatively during this difficult time. I began volunteering at a local radio station which was part of a music venue where I played gigs at. I thought this would be a great way to keep my voice active and also touch base with my music roots, as I was chosen to host the unsigned music show. As a radio host, you have to have a certain persona about you by keeping the listener engaged in between songs. My husband is a guitar teacher and an illustrator so whilst he couldn’t teach his students, he started designing his own comic book. He asked me to voice a couple of the characters and that’s when it hit me. I could potentially use my voice in other ways when I’m not singing. So I did a lot of research into voice acting as well as take some classes and when it was time for me to go back to my full time job, I saw the creative energy slowly drain away and I hated that feeling. My husband also saw a huge change in my personality so we had a talk and I decided to take a big risk by quitting my full time job and go self employed. He was already self employed so he understood how it worked and wanted to support me in having a better work life balance. It wasn’t easy at first but I can safely say that it’s nearly been 2 years since I took the plunge and I haven’t looked back!
What is the first thing you recommend beginners do?
Training! Voice acting is acting first and foremost so it’s essential to understand that it’s more than just having a nice voice or being able to do impressions. It’s also learning how important it is to have a good space, the business side of it, etc. I highly recommend Gravy for the Brain as a platform to go to about this. If you are looking for a voice acting coach, this all depends on what style of voice over you are looking to get in to i.e Commercials, Corporate, Animation, Gaming, etc. A couple of people I have previously trained with who are also full time in voiceover are: Tanya Rich, Sarah Nightingale, Leonie Schliesing and Richard Reed.
What do you do to take care of your voice on a daily basis?
I drink lots of water. Hydration is key! Doing vocal warm ups before entering the booth, whether it’s for a job, auditions or just general practice, can help you not trip up over your words and also sustain your performance for longer. I also use Vocalzone, a company I’m sponsored by who have helped me out for years.

They provide a great variety of products to help your voice if it’s feeling rough or hoarse. The pastilles have an extremely powerful taste but I tend to use the vocal spray, as it’s not as harsh and can be used more throughout the day. You can get a discount on Vocalzone products if you use the code via my Linktree.
What advice would you give for new singers?

If it hurts, stop! You should never have to strain your voice in order to give a great performance. I would also say that social media is a great place to showcase your talents so whether you write your own music or want to perform something from your favourite artist or band, just go for it because you never know who is listening/watching!
What has been the most rewarding project you’ve worked on so far?
I honestly think it was the job that gave me my first chance at doing voice over professionally. I was originally hired as a singer and acoustic guitarist for the game trailer: Cattle Country by Playtonic. The game is a cosy farm simulator where you grow crops, look after animals, speak to the townsfolk, etc. Upon seeing that I was doing voice acting too and listening to my demo reel, they asked if I could provide a Southern American accent at the end of the trailer, announcing the consoles the game will be featured on. Baring in mind I’m British and from the UK, I was shocked but also very excited to have been given this opportunity. They loved everything I did and I received a copy of the game to play as well. All of the other trailers for the game were voiced by Roger Clark aka Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption 2 so it kinda feels like we worked on the same job!
Biggest success story so far?
I technically cannot talk about it yet as I’m under NDA but watch this space! Something I can talk about is that I have recently got a voice acting role in the upcoming game, ‘The Bureau of Fantastical and Arcane Affairs,’ which has been given the seal of approval by Critical Role’s Matt Mercer and Laura Bailey at the Summer Games Show earlier in 2025.
Tell us about your journey as a singer songwriter.
Growing up, my grandad played harmonica around the house. He also sang with me which is where my musical influence first began. Showing much interest in this subject, I was bought an electric guitar for my birthday. However I didn’t have it for long as we were moving house and my mum held it by the neck when walking down the stairs. She accidentally dropped it which split it in half. She then bought me an electro-acoustic guitar saying it was practically the same as it still plugs in but it was cheaper so that’s how I started performing acoustically.

One summer, my mum entered me into a local talent competition where I had written and performed one of my very first songs and I came 3rd! However during the lead up to the show, I suffered a big panic attack which hospitalised me. Over the years, I learnt to overcome this but even to this day, I occasionally get stage fright if performing by myself (much more confident with others but I don’t get that stage fright when voice acting strangely!) I began having lessons for guitar in high school and I didn’t start having vocal lessons until I got to college. I studied popular music and vocal performance at college and university. After graduating, I was sponsored by Roland for a year to go on an education tour and talk/demonstrate their products to students around the UK. In between this time, I was writing my own songs and performing them at venues up and down the country. I also recorded a few of them which you can listen to on your favourite streaming platform along with a couple of music videos on Youtube as well. My most notable gig includes supporting Pink and Joe Bonamassa at the NEC in Birmingham. In 2024, I gained the title: Award Winning Singer Songwriter as I was commissioned to create a song for a short film, which ended up winning Best Drama at Bristol Film Festival. When not pursuing solo material, I have been in a few projects ranging from original pop rock bands to soul and funk cover bands but my main ensemble now is an acoustic duo named Fever Dream. We have just finished writing our first visual concept album about mental health and we plan to record and release it in 2026.
What goals or dreams do you have for your acting career in the future?
I would love to be in a game like Life Is Strange which is heavily narrative driven. If I can get one of my songs on the official soundtrack too, that would be amazing! My other goals include getting an agent, being nominated/winning an award for best performance and having a recording session at OMUK, a studio where you can pick from their weapons wall and physically use it when voicing effort attack noises.
Where can folks support you and your work?
Here is my Linktree where you can find more about the projects I’ve been in, my social media handles, etc: https://linktr.ee/tammykingofficial – I am mainly on Instagram @tammykingofficial so if you want to say hi, please do!
