Attending the SpongeBob SquarePants panel at NYCC 2024 was a thrill for fans as Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Roger Bumpass, Carolyn Lawrence, and Mr. Lawrence shared insights and exciting news. Tom Kenny reflected on realizing the show’s potential when they began showing the pilot on VHS before it aired, and the response was incredibly positive.

They also touched on The Patrick Star Show and the pressure behind creating the spin-off. Despite initial backlash, the show found its footing, and it’s now getting a Thanksgiving special, a Christmas special, and will extend into Seasons 4 and 5. Bill admitted it was both nerve-wracking and rewarding to see Patrick’s world come to life.

Favorite episode moments were shared too, with Tom Kenny picking Sailor Mouth, while Bill and Carolyn highlighted the Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy episodes. Roger loved working on episodes with live-action elements.

The 25th anniversary will be celebrated with a fairy-tale inspired episode titled “Snow Yellow”, and a stop-motion Christmas special with Sandy, featuring her family. Mr. Lawrence also shared how his friendship with Tom and Steven Hillenburg led him to become Plankton and a writer on the show, adding another fun layer to the SpongeBob legacy.
