Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle Review

Fans are excited that Demon Slayer is coming back to theaters as the final arc has arrived. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle is the latest film from the anime series to get the big screen treatment. We are bringing not one but three films to tell the Infinity Castle arc, as the movie title suggests. The first installment in the trilogy promises to deliver epic fights, character moments, and dramatic elements to kick-start what is sure to be a powerful finale. What we have so far is a good way to begin the final chapter that tackles some worthy character development while delivering some dazzling animation that only a film like this would bring.

Picking up at the end of the Hashira Training Arc, we find the Demon Slayer Corps trapped inside Muzan’s Infinity Castle after failing to capture him on their home base. In this brand new setting, it is a vast structure that feels like another dimension where the demons are at their strongest. The castle itself looks amazing, all thanks to the special VFX that was added to the animation. It often feels like we are suddenly diving deep into the rabbit hole in this pocket dimension that has many doors and walls, resembling a big city. The animators have put a lot of effort into putting this together to make the Infinity Castle one of the most ambitious settings in an anime series.

Our main hero, Tanjiro, along with the Hashira, must contend with the infinite number of floors as they survive a horde of demons. On top of that, they also must find Muzan, as he controls the very structure that this castle is built on. He is hiding somewhere while he tries to find a way to deal with Tamayo, who has injected an anti-serum to turn Nezuko back into a human. The toughest task for these warriors is not just survival, but to kill an ancient demon who is hard to kill, and their only option is to use the sun against him.

Most of our team is separated when they enter the Infinity Castle, leaving them on their own to fend for themselves against the Upper Rank demons. As we’ve seen on this show, the characters that we grow fond of may soon meet their demise. Once the film starts, audiences can expect some heartbreak when some of our favorite characters might end up being killed by these powerful demons as they sacrifice their lives to avenge the death of their leader. We can also expect some emotional backstories from the Upper Rank demons to give a little history of their journey as humans before turning into demons for Muzan’s army.

There’s a lot to unpack in this film, as we go back and forth between the action taking place and some flashbacks with these characters. We do get some amazing battle sequences between the Hashira and the Upper Rank demons, but it does slow down the pace to help bridge the gap between some of the big fights. The movie does feel long at times due to the change of pace, leaving for an uneven structure to the storytelling. It often tends to be more like watching 3-4 episodes of the anime being stuffed into a two-hour film. However, it is often a good payoff to get some amazing fights while also giving us a reason to care for the villains and their tragic backgrounds.

The movie has three major battles going on: Shinobu Kocho taking on an Upper Rank demon after the death of her sister at his hands, Zenitsu coming face-to-face with his classmate Kaigaku, who has become a demon himself, and Tanjiro, who has teamed up with Giyu to take on returning demon Akaza. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle utilizes the same structure as the anime, with its fight sequences being sprinkled with backstories between the Hashira and the Upper Rank demons. This is something the anime has been known for, so it’s nothing that fans aren’t familiar with. We do get some dazzling action sequences that feel climactic every time we see them.

Demon Slayer is known for their excellent use of animation with its fluidity and beauty. There’s a mix of CGI and animation that blends perfectly to create beautiful action scenes that look really good on the big screen. The musical score also helps hype up the fights to enhance the experience. The film does a great job of utilizing the tools at the disposal of these animators and designers to create an epic start to what is sure to be an impactful finale to one of the most popular anime series we have seen in a while.

Despite the number of characters shown in the film, each one of them gets moments of growth that make us care for them, even the bad guys. We do get to see Zenitsu go from an emotional weakling to quite a powerful swordsman as he goes into battle against a former classmate to make amends for his grandfather. Even our main protagonist gets some growth as he has become more like on the level of a Hashira after going toe-to-toe with these high-ranking demons. Perhaps the most unexpected character development would be Akaza, the third Upper Rank demon who took the life of Hashira Kaigaku earlier in the series. His backstory is a tragic one and gives us a better understanding of why he’s become so blood-bent on being stronger, no matter who he kills.

As a result, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle is a great way to start the final arc and give fans what they want. Even if the structure feels unbalanced and hampered by these flashbacks, the fight sequences will surely get audiences excited to see it all happening in the theater. It may be a while before we see the next part in the epic finale, but this has surely given Demon Slayer a reason why it’s a franchise that anyone who is a fan of action-based anime should get into.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle hits theaters on September 12th, 2025.
