A Plant-Eating Dragon Continues its Journey: ‘A Herbivorous Dragon of 5,000 Years’ Snags a Second Season

Kadokawa’s Sneaker Bunko imprint has dropped the news we’ve all been waiting for. Or, okay, the news that I’ve been waiting for. ‘A Herbivorous Dragon of 5,000 Years Gets Unfairly Villainized’ (or Yowai 5000-nen no Sōshoku Dragon, Iware Naki Jaryū Nintei if you want to get all formal about it) is getting a second season!

A Recap For Those Who Live Under A Rock (Or In A Cave)

For those not in the know, the first season debuted on bilibili back in July 2022, and they even treated us to English subtitles a month later. You’ve got to love that international love! The Japanese-dubbed version rolled out in January 2023, making its way through AT-X, Tokyo MX, and BS Fuji. So, this dragon’s got wings, people!

A Dragon Unlike Any Other

The series centers around Reiko, a girl who seeks the aid of a 5,000-year-old dragon to save her village from a demon king. The twist? This dragon is a vegetarian and pretty much a softie, not the flame-breathing, knight-munching stereotype you’d expect. Reiko claims she’s his disciple and can tap into his “infinite powers,” but let’s be real, the only thing infinite here is the dragon’s love for leafy greens.

A History Worth Unfolding

This adorable tale started life as a novel series by Kaisei Enomoto, posted on the “Shōsetsuka ni Narō” website in June 2017. The latest chapter landed in June 2020, and the series has since spawned several short stories and a manga adaptation. Yes, they’ve covered all media bases because when you have a dragon this unique, you’ve got to let it soar in every form possible.

What’s Next?

With the second season announcement, the question on everyone’s mind (or at least, on my mind) is: What’s next? Will our veggie-loving dragon finally get the respect he deserves? Or will he be relegated to being the kale of the dragon world — you know, good for you but forever misunderstood?

Where Can You Watch It?

If you’re itching to jump into this world, you can stream the first season on Crunchyroll and bilibili. And really, who could say no to a dragon that probably enjoys pumpkin spice lattes and argues about the merits of gluten-free diets?

A second season of a dragon who would rather munch on a salad than a soldier is coming your way. If that’s not a sign that we’re living in the golden age of anime, I don’t know what is.

If this kind of unique, dragon-centric content tickles your fancy, consider supporting All Ages of Geek on Patreon. We’ve got even more geeky goodies lined up, and trust me, it’s worth every penny.

So mark your calendars, prepare your best dragon memes, and let’s get ready for another season of vegetarian dragon adventures!
