If I’m going to be completely honest, I’m not a huge fan of watching sad animes. Mostly because 1) I don’t like crying over a show and 2) it makes me sad how there isn’t that happy ending a lot of animes have.

What I thought was going to be a happy romantic anime, Your Lie in April was not that at all. I do have to admit it is an excellent anime to watch, but be warned, you will cry.

Kosei Arima is a famous piano prodigy who won multiple competitions at a young age. After his mom dies, Kosei has a mental breakdown while performing at a piano recital and is unable to hear the sound of his piano.

Two years go by and Kosei has not touched the piano and views the world in monochrome. It seems he has lost any ambition in life and hangs out with his friends Tsubaki Sawabe and Ryota Watari. One day Tsubaki Watari invites Kosei to meet her at a park and runs into Kaori Miyazono who claims he has a crush on Tsubaki. Kosei finds out Kaori is a violinist who is very free-spirited and does not play according to the sheet music.

Kaori constantly encourages Kosei to play the piano and even asks him to be her accompanist at a competition. She continues to uplift Kosei’s spirits and he quickly realizes he loves her, although she seems to only be interested in Ryota.

Through their interaction, Kaori helps Kosei realize that music isn’t just what’s on the sheet, but rather a way to convey his emotions to the audience. He slowly starts to be able to express himself and realize that competition is not the only way to play music. Kosei finally starts to feel like he is becoming a musician himself.

I won’t go into further details because that’s up to you to decide if you want to watch the anime. I will say that the anime begins to take a dark turn and in the end leaves the viewer in tears.

Despite it being such a sad anime, it shows how much impact a person can have in our lives. And even in moments where all hope is lost, all it takes is one person to truly believe in who we are to find that love or passion for whatever it is.
