At Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2025, we got a closer look at Fresh Tracks from Buffalo Buffalo. The core idea is direct. You ski, and everything lines up with the music. Movement, obstacles, and timing all follow the rhythm, so you’re staying in sync with it.
The developers described it as a mix of rhythm gameplay, roguelike structure, and endless runner pacing. That sounds like a lot, but in practice it feels smooth. You’re constantly moving forward, making small decisions in real time while the music carries the pace.
Fresh Tracks is not a Menu-Based Rhythm Game
Most rhythm games let you pick a track and play it on its own. Fresh Tracks handles things differently.
Here, the music is tied to progression. As you move deeper into the game, the tracks change along with the environment. The further you go, the stranger and much more interesting everything becomes, both visually and musically. That structure gives the game a sense of direction without stopping the action.
Sound That Reacts to You
Every track comes with its own sound design. Actions like hitting objects, collecting items, or taking damage all match the music you’re currently in. It’s a small detail, but it adds up. Instead of the audio sitting behind the gameplay, it responds to what you’re doing.
There’s also a large set of songs, including additional tracks tied to boss encounters, so the audio doesn’t feel repetitive even during longer sessions.
Built from a Simple Idea
The starting point came from skiing itself. The team talked about how the side-to-side motion already feels rhythmic, especially when you’re moving at speed. That became the base for everything else.
From there, they layered in other ideas. Replayability, continuous forward movement, and a story that unfolds while you play instead of stopping you.
Story Inside the Action
Fresh Tracks includes a narrative that plays out during runs. Voice work and music carry the story forward without pulling you out of the experience. The full playthrough is meant to take several hours, with the story gradually building as you keep going.
A Focused Approach
One thing the team mentioned during our conversation was scope. Instead of trying to do everything at once, they chose to go deeper in specific areas, especially the music. That choice shows in how central the soundtrack is as it’s part of how the game works.

Where to Find Fresh Tracks
Fresh Tracks is available on Steam, with console releases planned. You can also follow updates directly through Buffalo Buffalo as they continue work on future projects.
We’ll have more from Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2025 soon, including more hands-on coverage and developer interviews.
