AnimeNYC 2024: Critical Role Cast Reunites For Fireside Chat

The cast of Critical Role took over AnimeNYC as they interacted with fans at their panel talking about the popular web series. Joined by voice actors Matthew Mercer, Ashley Johnson, Travis Willingham, Laura Bailey, Liam O’Brien, Taliesin Jaffe, Marisha Ray, and Sam Riegel, the panel got to reminisce on their time participating in the live play of their three campaigns of Dungeons & Dragons. Moderated by YouTuber and DnD player Ginny Di, the cast also shared some insight into playing DnD for those looking to start their own game.

The panel kicked off with the cast answering online fan questions, mostly involving their work in anime. One of the questions was regarding working on The Legend of Vox Machina, an animated series based on their first campaign in Critical Role. Travis offered his take saying how working in anime has helped him in tackling original work like Vox Machina. He also added how refreshing it was to play a new character in Critical Role that he hadn’t done before. When asked about shows that were fun to work on, Matt brought up the Fate series as one of his favorites getting to do. Laura was given an anime question as well regarding the similarities between her characters Tohru on Fruit Baskets and Jester in Vox Machina. Liam, who has worked in the reboot of Sailor Moon, hopes to see other shows getting a second life likeRevolutionary Girl Utena and Akira

Other cast members offered their intake on working through the Critical Role series and the impact it had on their work. Taliesin spoke on how his chronic pain helped him get into the mindset of his character Ashton in the show’s current campaign who also is overcoming an injury. Marisha touched upon her time playing Keyleth, the half-elf druid in the first campaign as well as in Vox Machina. She said she enjoyed getting to play the character and seeing her evolve throughout the story. Ashley got to tell her journey of playing Fern, seeing how much she has gone from a comedic character into a serious and well-grounded one.

Towards the end of the panel, the Critical Role team took on some audience questions and provided some information on what’s coming up for the series. Both Liam and Marisha discuss the 50th anniversary of DnD and how Critical Role has renewed interest in the game for new players unfamiliar with the game. They both explained how Critical Role would leave such a lasting legacy on the history of DnD. Even Critical Role will be celebrating 10 years in 2025, with some new things in store for fans. Marisha teased that some live shows may be coming shortly, but hopes for fans to tune in for the new season of Vox Machina in October. Matt also shares some updates on their new game Daggerheart, which will be a live DnD play test before it is released.
