We Interviewed Voice Actor Faux!

We had the pleasure of chatting with voice actor Faux all about their creative journey! Check it out to learn more about their work!

1.What initially inspired you to become a creator, and how has that inspiration evolved throughout your creative journey?

When I was in middle school, I was introduced to the world of Neopets and the online world at large. There were these “pet pages” that you could customize and make fun characters, and as an artist/creator since I was little, it was an amazing opportunity to share my interest with the world and connect with others like me!Seeing the wealth of talent and creativity of others just like me, designing things for fun and to improve their skills constantly inspired and pushed me to do the same.  It was all downhill from there and I’ve been chronically online sharing stories, songs, artwork, and silly voices ever since.

2.Can you share a specific moment or experience that fueled your passion for your current creative project?

My most recent creative project was voiceover work for webcomics! It’s always amazing seeing the artist’s reaction on having their stories come to life in a completely different way and (as a comic artist myself) I understand the feeling from both sides! Giving back to the greater creative community at large is something I’ve always been passionate about and my favorite part of what I do.

3.What challenges have you encountered as an indie creator, and how have they shaped your approach to your work?

Especially these days, there is SO much competition. It’s wonderful that things are so accessible, and classes on subjects that we had to back in the day train ourselves to do are just part of the curriculum. It’s created some AMAZING talent at an early age-and as an older creative, it makes me a little jealous. The fact that not everything you love to do is always profitable and you need to earn a living definitely limits how much time I can spend to my more creative endeavors-something I would love to work on in the future. Even so, the algorithm is a harsh mistress.

4.Are there any particular creators who have significantly influenced your style or approach? How do you incorporate those influences into your own unique voice?

Most definitely creatives like Matpat, Markiplier, Drawfee, game developers like Subjectively and many pokemon-tubers have helped me to pursue my dreams. More specifically amazing voice over artists like Amalee who have entered their Vtuber era have inspired me to do something similar-though it’s definitely a process! It amazes me how they’re able to handle it all. I mostly try to incorporate the fun, creative, and versatile nature of how they work to cover all the facets of the fandom while working and collaborating with their community at large!

 5. How do you navigate the balance between staying true to your artistic vision and adapting to feedback from your audience or collaborators?

In my current role, it’s difficult for me to really answer this question as I haven’t gotten TOO much feedback on my work. I mostly just try to ask for suggestions on what they’d like to see-If people respond positively or if more people seem to jive with the content I’ll move towards that, but ultimately I focus on what I love and doing what I love regardless of the “numbers”.

6.Can you recall a memorable success story or milestone in your indie creator journey that stands out as a turning point for you?

This too I’m still struggling with. I think the biggest turning point for me was back in 2011 when I used to do MLP vocal covers. I was able to collaborate with so many amazing people, and connect the world over-People sought me out for vocals and voices and it was an amazing time that really spurred me forth. Due to life and lack of time, I’ve distanced myself from that a bit but I’m hoping to continue making as many connections as I can in my new fields of interest and return to that busy but wonderful time to see how far we can all grow as creatives!

7.What role do setbacks or failures play in your creative process, and how do you overcome them to keep moving forward?

The biggest setback for me has always been self-doubt. I compare myself with others constantly, and in a system that is built for that, it’s hard not to. But then I think back to amazing creatives like Toby Fox who doodled a tiny skeleton man and made an entire game on their own by putting some sprites and a silly story together and as long as you have the support from friends and other creatives, someone will love what you do-no matter how specific it might be. Being able to connect and network with other creatives has been my biggest challenge recently, which is why I’ve been attending Indie Questing gaming events, voice over workshops, and vtuber fundraise collabs to find my niche and people who love what I do!

 8. How do you manage your time and energy to sustain a consistent creative output while juggling other aspects of life?

To be honest, for a long time I didn’t. I got burntout quite often and even now am dealing with an extended burnout out after a long project completed. Still, doing little things every day, making sure not to compare my progress with others, and making achievable/obtainable goals helps even the smallest successes seem big and the largest hurdles manageable. Having great friends I can bounce ideas off of and just take some time away from it all helps out too.

9.Have you found any unexpected joys or rewards in the indie creator community, and how has it contributed to your overall experience?

The friendships I’ve made along the way and the impact I’ve been able to make! Through my streams over the years, I’ve helped raise over $3000 for charities world wide, inspired people to start their own creative careers, and been able to touch the lives of so many who are going through the same things I have. It’s strange to think one silly person like me-Or the voice I provide characters they love-can have such an impact.

10.If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring creators, what would it be based on your own lessons learned?

PACE YOURSELF. You are your own creative and the supporters who really matter are those that are along for the ride and care about YOUR health above caring just about what you create. Follow your passion, try something new, and connect with as many people as you can to get a strong, supportive, creative backbone! You got this!

11. What are your thoughts on All Ages of Geek? What are some things we should change/do? What are something you enjoy about our website?

I have seen the wonderful things that you do, the way you’ve worked with so many creatives to bring their dreams to life and the opportunities you provide and it’s been inspirational! I would love the opportunity to work on something under your studio in the future, but for now, I’ll keep enjoying the great content you support and the creators who design them. As far as the website goes, it’s easy to follow and the layout is clean and to the point-I especially appreciate how you can get to know the designers!

Goals for 2024

As a streamer and creative, I REALLY want to have the opportunity to stream a game that I voice in. I would love for my creative worlds to collide and help inspire others just as much as games and voice actor’s performances have inspired me in the past. Other than that, get to know some more indie game developers through servers like the Voice Acting Guild, DevTalk, and so many others!
