AnimeNYC 2024: Author Scott Westerfeld and Studio Orange Offer Sneak Peak at Netflix’s Leviathan

Audiences are about to be introduced to the world of Leviathan in 2025, and AnimeNYC teased what’s to come in the new anime series coming to Netflix. Based on Scott Westerfeld’s trilogy of books, the anime convention hosted a panel with the author as well as Qubic Pictures executive producer Justin Leach alongside Studio Orange producers Yoshihiro Watanabe and Daigo Ikeda. Attendees were shown a preview of the artwork going into the upcoming series as well as some new footage from the series before being shown to the public. For fans of Westerfeld’s work and Studio Orange, this was a match made in heaven for both parties to create something incredible for their respective audience.

The new Netflix series offers a glimpse into an alternative version of World War I where mechs and genetically engineered creatures are used for war. Much like the novels, Leviathan follows the plot of the story closely alongside some central characters as they interact with historical figures as war draws near. The panelists showed attendees some artwork with the characters of the series as well as the global settings that would take place within the narrative. There were also giant machines that were shown, known as Clangers in the novels. Both Watanabe and Ikeda explained the process of creating the world from the books and the inspiration they took from Studio Orange’s previous works.

At the panel, Leach spoke about how much research was done to assemble the show. Since Leviathan draws heavily into World War I history, the EP said that to keep it authentic, a historian was consulted to make sure that much of the real facts of the war in the fictional story matched with what history was told. Westerfeld even commented how his journey into Istanbul helped him learn the historical landscape of these places. Studio Orange also got deep into the research looking into these different countries to give that global context that the books are known for.

Westerfeld revealed that the series would be a 12-episode show that adapts all three books from the trilogy. The creators said this allowed them to go all out for the Netflix series to tell the full story. In a binging landscape, audiences would be able to catch Leviathan in its entirety once it comes out on the streaming platform next year. Towards the end of the panel, a preview trailer was shown for attendees to get a glimpse at the animation and how far along it has gotten since the show’s announcement earlier this summer.
