We Interviewed Zac Elliot the Creator of Muscle Maddie

We had the pleasure of chatting with Zac Elliot all about his series Muscle Maddie. Want to know more about Zac check out our interview HERE and be sure to support Muscle Maddie HERE!

What inspired your to make Muscle Maddie?

It all started with dubbing a webcomic from an artist I liked. After the video was finished, he offered myself and the three VAs a free sketch commission!

I had already been playing with the idea of the opposite of my first original character, Doctor Menace; an eccentric inventor who goes on many adventures!

I knew I wanted this character to be someone who was based on physical strength and was athletically active. As well as making this a girl from the get go as I thought a strong woman would play well off of Menace’s smart guy routine.

The original design showcased her in a sports bra, yoga pants, and ponytail coming out of her cap; traits that are still a part of her character to this day!

However, the sports jacket was added for style and would later be removed to showcase her muscles that she has; enforcing the idea of a character that was strong, confident, and content with one’s body image.

On March 27th, 2021, the Muscle Maddie Twitter page was created as a place to showcase the character and her story! Starting off as an interactive based account, it later would change when the first webcomic would air on September 6th, 2021 with the introduction of Maddie’s best friend, Lisa!

The idea behind Maddie’s character would later go through much development! Starting off as an opposite to Menace to even being a distant cousin. However, it was later decided to cut ties from the Menace character entirely and have her take the starring role.

Her personality is meant to represent a boundless optimism and motivation nature that is not seen in most western media nowadays. While she still has a relatability about her, she can get incredibly competitive and even enraged at people who hurt her friends!

With all of this in mind, I knew that having these characters may create the wrong impression that this is a love story, but I have no plans for many romances in the series.

This is a story of dealing with the struggles of everyday life and how we can try to help others even if it’s only just a little bit.

What are some things fans can expect with this visual novel?

I’m glad you asked! The webcomic itself is still releasing new chapters as usual, but we have even more in store too!

For starters, a Patreon is in the works and will be released with special rewards that I’m sure people will enjoy!

Other things include videos, guest artists, audio productions and many more projects!

However, I cannot put a release date on many of these things as I’m still graphing out a reasonable timetable and will detail about them in the future!

As a writer who or what inspires your work?

I have always been a fan of ensemble cast shows; a series where you can have stories outside of the main cast.

Anime like Nichijou, Lucky Star, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, One Piece, and My Hero Academia to name a few.

Other works include The Simpsons, Back to the Future, SpongeBob, and many more.

As for the art direction, I wanted this to be in the style of a visual novel from the start. Video games like Ace Attorney, Dangonronpa, Murder By Numbers, and the Persona series help dictate the art style, presentation and the vibe I wanted for the story.

Goals for 2023?

In 2023, I’m hoping to have the Patreon already launched, release a new video every 2 weeks, and slowly grow an audience that I can do this full time.

Other goals include hosting a panel or having a booth at a convention, releasing a yearly calendar surge Muscle Maddie characters and other merchandise for fans!

Where can people support your work?

Patreon after it launches, but the best way is to let others know about the series.

Right now, the project is entirely paid out of pocket and with your support after the Patreon launches, then not only would we be able to bring out more exciting content regularly, but also allow me to become a full time creator!

It’s going to be a long and hard road, but just like Maddie says, “Let’s BRING IT!!!”

Our Original comic “I Married a Monster on a Hill” Is now on social media. Check it out!
