We interviewed Wholesome Games

We interviewed Wholesome Games all about their work!

1. Tell us about  Wholesome Games.

Wholesome Games is a community that started on Twitter. I was a big fan of games like Ooblets and Mineko’s Night Market, and I wanted to find more games that gave me that feeling. So I began curating games according to their feelings of comfort, compassion, and coziness.

Since then, the community has grown to more than 350k members across Twitter, Discord, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram!

2. What should those submitting to Wholesome Direct 2022 Game and Wholesome Direct 2022 Creator Interest expect?

Those who are unfamiliar with Wholesome Direct should definitely check out our two previous showcases to get a better idea of what to expect, but basically, anyone can submit their game. We sort through 300+ submissions and pick out games that we think are a great fit and share them with as many folks as we can via YouTube, Twitch, etc. There are no fees of any kind, so it’s a great way to discover talented indies who perhaps don’t have the marketing budget of bigger studios.

For the first time, we also have a form for content creators who want to co-stream or collaborate with us. In the past, we’ve gotten a lot of messages from streamers asking if it was OK to co-stream Wholesome Direct, and the answer is an enthusiastic “YES!” – having this form makes it even easier for us to support those content creators; for instance, sending them a streaming kit or answering any questions they may have about the event.

3. Tell us about Wholesome Game Jam.

The Wholesome Games Jam is a really cool project led by Esmeé van’t Hoff and Giulia Biazus. It’s a low-key jam with no competitive element, so everyone involved gets to focus on having fun, being creative, and making new friends.

4.  What can people expect to see if they support Wholesome Games?

Games! At the end of the day, everything we do is intended to help players discover new, amazing games from indie developers, whether that’s on social media or as part of Wholesome Direct. In the past, we found that uplifting, cozy games never seemed to get the same spotlight as other games, so we hope to continue making sure there is room for every kind of game and every kind of player.

5. Plans for 2022?

Right now the focus is entirely on making sure Wholesome Direct 2022 is super entertaining for fans and helpful for the developers that participate. I’m excited about the future and all the ways Wholesome Games could grow, but I never want to take for granted the enthusiasm people have for what we do now, especially Wholesome Direct.
