We Interviewed Voice Actor Carl G Brooks!

We had the pleasure of interviewing voice actor Carl G Brooks all about their work!

“Carl G Brooks (He/Him) is an actor and writer living and working in Dallas/Fort Worth, Tx. Here Carl writes screenplays and provides voice over remotely, in-person and travels when necessary. Apart from business Carl enjoys practicing drum set, hiking, visual art and crafting. He’s known for such roles as Sem in Sem: Adventures Across Time audio series,  Tot Musica from One Piece RED and Jack from the multi-platform game Ghostrunner. “

1.What inspired you to become a voice actor?

  • Ever since I was five years old and learned that voicing for cartoons was a real job, I was sold for life. Growing up with Mel Blanc, Frank Welker and Pat Fraley sets an impression on a lad. From Saturday morning cartoons to video games, everything is a work of art. As an actor, it gives me great joy to contribute to the finished work and on to the next.

2.Can you describe your process for preparing for a voice acting role?

  • It can vary. Majority of the time I have no context to the details of a session. When I do, I rehearse accordingly with a bit of improv in character. When I don’t, tongue twisters, breathing and facial exercises are standard practices.

3.What has been your biggest challenge as a voice actor and how have you overcome it?

  • Growing up Dyslexic and hardly ever reading was a huge setback in my youth. So I’ve remedied it by reading aloud and it has been a beneficial exercise. Not just for narration but characterization and accents, too. Always with clear enunciation and pace. Plus, you learn what you’re reading about while you’re working out. Fun!

4.Can you tell us about a particularly memorable project you’ve worked on and why it stands out to you?

  • Stargazer was my first official casting by the graduating animation class of 2019-2020 at University of North Texas. The experience they gave offered an opportunity to work on a soundstage compared to what you would see in Pixar Behind The Scenes features.

5. How do you handle the pressure of performing in front of a microphone?

  • The biggest advice to follow is, it’s not only you behind the mic. You, the director and the engineer (minimally) are a team and are focused on the needs of what is called for in the session. You’re not going in alone and you have professional help there with you.

6.Can you share any advice for aspiring voice actors just starting out in the industry?

  • Improv! Take improv courses online or near you.

7.Can you tell us about a time when you had to adapt to a new character or voice?

  • One time I had provided a voice to a character I had just met. Knowing he was an older gent, I went deep in my register. After the first take I was asked to go deeper which caused me to learn how to go lower than my natural register. Later on, after these sessions, I tend to play with these new characters to remember them and learn how to better utilize my facility in case I record for them again or for future roles.

8. How do you stay motivated and engaged during long recording sessions?

  • Focus. Ask questions when curious. React as guided by both the director and your instincts. And should a session be too much, you can always advocate for yourself and ask for a quick break. Vocal health is still important.

9.Can you tell us about an experience you had while working on a project where you had to improvise or come up with an unexpected solution?

  • Once I’ve had to gargle water in a way to emulate drowning.

10.Can you share a funny or interesting story from your time as a voice actor?

  • You are going to find lots of funny stories you can never tell in this industry. Ha!

11.Can you share your favorite voice acting moment or performance?

  • So far it has to be three bit roles in The Greatest Demon Lord. A thespian, a person in the crowd and one of the conspirators at the end of episode 3. It was simply a refreshing flex of characters at once.

12.Can you tell us about a voice acting project you turned down and why?

  • I won’t accept roles that are violent NSFW convent. It’s a stern pass.

13. How do you keep your voice in good condition for voice acting?

  • Lots of water, tea, coffee and laughter.

14.Can you tell us about a time when you had to take on a role that was completely different from what you were used to?

  • Can’t say I’ve had the pleasure just yet but I’m looking forward to it.

15.What are your thoughts on All Ages of Geek and what can we improve on to make it a better platform?

  • It looks like a fantastic site filled with Anime/Geek goodness.

16.Where can people find you online?
