Sora smashes his way into Super Smash Brothers Ultimate

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate announced Sora, the main character from Kingdom Hearts, as the last downloadable character (DLC), bringing the roster up to 82 total characters for the game. Sora will be released on October 18 in Challenger Pack 11, rounding out the Switch fighting game’s second Fighters Pass.

Although most characters added in the Super Smash Bros. world usually include appearances from other people in the character’s world, the game will not feature Sora’s Disney companions from Kingdom Hearts. Kairi and Riku from Kingdom Hearts will make appearances in the game according to the game play teaser. The Dive to the Heart stage accompanying Sora features stained glass windows from the Kingdom Hearts series. Sora is in one, leaning alongside other characters from his game.

The announcement comes as the twentieth anniversary of Kingdom Hearts is on its way in March of 2022. Kingdom Hearts’ Director Tetsuya Nomura has teased future projects for the Kingdom Hearts saga, 20th anniversary merchandise, and a special event for the 20th anniversary in March 2022. In addition to all of the 20th anniversary buzz, it was announced Kingdom Hearts game bundles will be coming to the Nintendo Switch through the cloud. All of this was announced in the 20th anniversary trailer. Here’s Tetsuya Nomura’s official tweet on the new announcements.

Tweet translation:

Tetsuya Nomura: Tetsuya Nomura: “Sora has been picked as the final fighter of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Ever since it was decided and we got the invitation, I regularly supervised Sora’s inclusion and I’ve seen how meticulous the developers are. I’m sure you’ll all be satisfied. I can’t thank Mr. Sakurai and his staff enough.”

“Thanks to everyone’s support, Kingdom Hearts will celebrate its 20th anniversary in March 2022. We’ve prepared a trailer for the occasion, which teases some of the celebrations coming. Please wait for more information regarding each of the news in the trailer. We’re also planning several things not shown in this trailer. Look forward to it.”

Although there will be a bit of a wait before March 2022, fans can look forward to downloading Sora’s DLC, which will be released October 18. Kingdom Hearts is expanding onto the Nintendo Switch console, and future projects are underway to continue Sora’s story. There are many exciting upcoming things in store for Kingdom Hearts’ fans.
