Sephiroth Comes To Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

One of the biggest announcements to come at this year’s Game Awards came from Nintendo with a trailer revealing that Final Fantasy VII villain Sephiroth will be making his debut as a playable character in the popular game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It has since sent people into a frenzy with a hugely positive reception to the revelation of Sephiroth becoming the latest addition to the best-selling fighting game on the system.

As shown in the trailer, the cinematic shows all of the fighters get a glimpse of Sephiroth as he makes his way to the battlegrounds, which catches Cloud Strife off guard as he senses his old enemy coming for them. What transpires is a fight between the two characters, which is reminiscent of the time they fought each other in Final Fantasy VII. Sephiroth also fights against other characters, including the main star Mario. His encounter with the red-capped hero was much talked about in the community when it was first shown. The video did tease a bit of gameplay with Sephiroth in action as we get a peek at his move set and special attack.

Sephiroth becomes the third character to be added to the second Fighters Pass alongside previous additions like Min Min from ARMS and Minecraft characters Steve and Alex. Players can nab the Fighters Pass for just $29.99 to gain access to six characters, with three remaining to be a mystery. They can also pay just $5.99 for each character separately if that is what they choose.

How the Final Fantasy VII character will be played remains to be seen, but at least we know that he’ll be using his sword based on the trailer we saw. We should expect to see more of what he can do during a gameplay event.

An upcoming event for the fighting game will be taking place on December 17th at 5 PM ET, which will provide some gameplay of Sephiroth. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai will be showing off the new fighter just as he has in the past with other new characters in the roster. News of the presentation was shared on Nintendo’s official Twitter account, so expect to see a first-look at Sephiroth’s fighting skills on the stage and hopefully, some new features like stages, Mii costumes, and other features as the company has shown in other showcases relating to the game.

The one-winged angel will make his debut on Smash later this month on the Nintendo Switch.
