On Twitter, Netflix shared a video showing actors Inaki Godoy, Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero Gibson, and Taz Skylar announce their involvement in the One Piece live-action television series. Godoy will be portraying our young hero and leader Monkey D. Luffy with Mackenyu playing swordsman Roronoa Zoro. Rudd takes on the role of thief and future pirate queen Nami while Gibson is set to portray weapons expert Usopp. Rounding out the main cast is Skylar who plays prince-turned-cook Sanji. These guys will be the main protagonists of the series as the TV adaptation follows the Straw Hat Pirates who go on a journey to find a long lost treasure.

Showrunner Steven Maeda and executive producer Matt Owens gave a statement as production on One Piece is set to begin soon. “We are so excited to set sail with this amazing and talented cast!”, the EPs said. “Finding the right people to pull off the looks, emotions, and actions of the iconic Straw Hats was a long and challenging (and fun!) process. Much like the search for the One Piece itself. But we have finally found the perfect fits! They have already begun working very hard to bring these characters to life. You will come to know and love them just as much as their manga counterparts. All of us can’t wait to show you what we’ve come up with! Onward to adventure!”

Manga creator Eiichrio Oda shared a statement on his excitement for the upcoming live-action adaptation. “We’ve been working with Netflix and Tomorrow Studios on the massive project that is the Hollywood live action series adaptation of ‘One Piece!’ How many years has it been since it was announced, right? I know, I know! But rest assured we’ve been making steady progress all along,” the author said.

Based on the best-selling manga series, One Piece centers on Luffy and his crew as he sets his sights on becoming King of the Pirates. The Netflix series will have a first season of 10 episodes, which was ordered earlier this year. Other than the manga, One Piece has also been adapted into a long-running anime series that has aired 20 seasons so far as well as a few theatrical films. The series is about to celebrate a milestone as they hit 1000 episodes this month.

First announced in 2017, the live-action One Piece series has yet to have a release date, but stay tuned as we get more updates on when the series launches!
