Marvel’s Moon Knight, the next marvel series to premiere in Disney+ after Hawkeye, the release date being March 30, still left unclear at this point if there will be a one episode premiere (like Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki and What If….?) or will be a two episodes premiere (like Wandavision and Hawkeye) but what we know is that the series will have 6 episodes in total.
The series will follow Oscar Issac’s character Marc Spector a.k.a Moon Knight in an origin story of the superhero, we know that Ethan Hawke will be a part of the cast that will accompany and possibly advise Marc, as seen in the trailer.
Now that I have mentioned the trailer that came out Monday, we also got the first poster and a synopsis for the series. Must point out that it happened the same day that we got the first full moon of the year (whoever thought of that is a genius) and did give us a first look into the series.
“The series follows Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life,” the synopsis reads. “Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt.”
The trailer show us that the main character is “Steve” is incapable of sleep, his grasp on what is reality and what is a dream is blurry, he seems sleepy during the day, which affects his works, as one of his (supposedly) colleagues, Nora, calls him “bloody useless” and he has vivid dreams, as he sees something coming from him while he’s in the elevator.
For what I’ve found, this is Khonshu, the god that gave Marc/Steve the title of Moon Knight.
Later he hears a ringtone in, what it looks like, a hidden hole in his wall, in there is a phone, when answer, a woman tells him “Oh my god, you are alive, what’s wrong with you, Marc” and we get the to see Ethan Hawke’s character (in the subtitles is named Arthur Harrow) which is a cult leader and knows about Steve/Marc and the voices in his head.
Next scene is Steve/Marc driving a trailer, but unaware that he’s holding a gun, in a car chase, then falling behind the trailer, then a cut to him running with a bag in a corridor, is implied that this happened in Egypt..
The trailer ends with Arthur telling Steve/Marc “embrace the chaos” then turning into Moon Knight and beating someone in a bathroom, ending with him jumping from one roof to another.
The details that stand out to me in the trailer, the first one being the “suit up” bandages surround him, appearing out of nowhere, but in two different scenes put together:
The first one is in the bathroom, the clothes turning into bandages.
The second one, outside of a building.
The Moon Knight suit is very different from what we have seen before. Instead of nanotechnology, like we have seen with Iron Man, Black Panther and Spider-Man, the suit seems more magical.
The second detail is the number of times a mirror appears, Marc/Steve even breaks one with his foot, a large number of times we see him looking at one, the reflection of a mirror can be related to his Dissociative Identity Disorder, seeing another self.
This is one of my favorite shots of the trailer, the reflections don’t even follow him.
Might indicate how his other personalities don’t do things like him or things that he likes, by the synopsis, it looks like that’s how he got those enemies that are looking for him.
My speculation is that the story might be a exploration of past and present, seeing first Steve, having this vivid dreams, blacking out, we don’t see what is happening, at first, but something isn’t right, until he learns about Moon Knight and what he might had done in the past as Marc, using flashbacks and a non-linear type of storyline, cutting between both or getting later in the series a whole episode being a flashback, explaining how Marc/Steve got in contact or develop the Moon Knight persona.
I count on having Oscar Issac change between Steve and Marc to flex his acting and to see the differences between both personalities. This being an adaptation, it seems that he doesn’t have powers, but that can change.
And Moon Knight seems to continue that trend of each marvel series focus on a different genre/style/format, i consider that one of the main strengths that Disney+ series can give, this one going for psychological horror and having a protagonist with a mental illness such a DID (dissociative identity disorder), the trailer did a great job to present enough, to generate intrigue and hype, i can say that i’m excited to see more of this character and how he interacts with the rest of the MCU
