All Ages of Geek Late to the Party

Interview with Late to the Party!

I had the pleasure of interviewing Robert and Vanessa of Late to the Party and here is what they had to say:

1) Why did you decide to start reacting and reviewing movies, television, and trailers?

We were already big fans of trailer reactions for a few years before we started our own. However, while watching reactions we found ourselves talking to the screen and trying to add our own talking points to the trailer we just saw. Eventually, we realized the only way to add our voices to the conversation was to do reaction videos ourselves. As for reviewing films, Robert was actually a film critic for Tucson’s local newspaper when he was younger and never got rid of the bug to critique film. The conversations we both had about movies almost daily made it apparent that we needed to do this for a living. Now we do.

2) Why the name Late to the Party? Is there something significant to you about the name?

“Late to the Party” has a very deep meaning for us. First, it was a reference to the fact that we were very late to the YouTube game filled with hundreds of trailer reactors (if not thousands) already doing what we wanted to do. Second, we both had full-time jobs and had no clue how to edit videos, so we relied on friends to get the editing done for us. Which resulted in our videos coming out a day later than everyone else’s. Third, we have always been slow on the uptake when it comes to film. We don’t keep our ear to the ground for movie news or gossip, so by the time we catch wind of the “goings on” in the entertainment world, it typically is already old news. And finally, there are TONS of movies and shows we have yet to watch that we want to react to on our channel. Many films that you would be surprised we haven’t seen yet. Why did you decide to start reacting and reviewing movies, television, and trailers?

3) What are some movies that you could watch every month and never get tired of them and is there a reason?

Vanessa’s go-to film is Titanic. We actually do watch it almost every month. We both saw it in theaters multiple times both on its initial run as well as its re-releases. It was a movie that struck a chord with Vanessa at a very young age. She would play Titanic on the playground with her friends and knows every line from beginning to end. Luckily Robert loves that movie as well, so Titanic nights are common. As for Robert, it’s gotta be Tombstone. Partly because it usually is on tv once a month and we always end up watching it. Living in Arizona we have an affinity for westerns but more importantly movies that were filmed in our own backyard. Our first full-fledged filming location video on our channel was for Tombstone, and at the moment is the ONLY Tombstone filming locations breakdown video that exists.

4) What movies, that you have reacted to their trailers, are you the most excited about and why?

Ghostbusters Afterlife for Robert. If Titanic is Vanessa’s go-to as a child, Ghostbusters is Robert’s. There are so many awesome films coming out, but Ghostbusters is the one that cuts the deepest for him. As for Vanessa, her most anticipated is House of Gucci. She LOVES the trailer and quotes it whenever she sees it. She isn’t a die-hard Lady Gaga fan, but the trailer just knocked it up to the top of the list for her.

5) I actually found you through your Marvel reactions so I would love to know what are your top 5 Marvel movies? They can be in the MCU or outside the MCU.

For Robert, his top 5 are from first to last, Iron Man, Spider-Man 2, The Avengers, Thor, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier

For Vanessa, her top 5 are from first to last, The Avengers, X-Men: First Class, Spider-Man 2, Thor: Ragnarok, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier

6) What television show and/or movie series do you wish would make a comeback?

Our answer for both is Community. #sixseasonsandamovie

7) Are there any directors, actors, or writers that you always make sure to catch their work and why? Is there any specific talent that you would like to see join forces?

There are so many amazing writers, directors, and actors out there right now making waves in the film industry. We are always delighted when new collaborations dazzle on the big screen. We will never miss a Nolan film, however, right now we are in love with Taika Waititi. On-screen or behind the camera, we will not miss his work. Any actor who partners with him is sure to delight us.
