D&D Podcasts YOU Need To Check Out!

by: @SchtickySchmidt

Dungeons and Dragons is a tabletop fantasy game that was first published in 1974. Since then, the game has evolved many times and seen a shift in its public reception. What was once seen as sort of this super uncool thing that only offensively stereotypical nerds played, it is now this very well-known and talked about activity that is home to all sorts of people. Not that there’s anything wrong with being super nerdy, of course *wink.*

In more recent years, D&D (or sometimes stylized as DnD) has become particularly popular in the podcast community. Whether it is a tip-based conversational resource for people making their own games or an “actual play” show where the listeners are treated to hearing a group of people roleplaying a cast of colorful characters– there’s a D&D podcast out there for it.

Two particularly well-known D&D podcasts are “The Adventure Zone” which is hosted by internet darlings, the McElroy brothers, and “Critical Role” which is made-up of a group of voice actors and sometimes hosts celebrity guests including the likes of Vin Diesel, Felicia Day, and Stephen Colbert.

If you haven’t listened to these podcasts, I highly recommend checking them out if you’re already a D&D fan or if you’re looking for a way to get into the game.

If you have listened to them and you’re looking for more D&D podcasts, this list is for you!

Here are Five D&D Playlists to Listen to if You’re a Fan of “The Adventure Zone” and “Critical Role.”

1.20 Sided Stories

If you like both shorter story arcs and tons of different pop culture phenomena, 20 Sided Stories might be the podcast for you. Having featured stories that are based around things such as Pokemon and Marvel, it offers a fun spin on the classic D&D fantasy setting. The cast is made up of actors, like Critical Role, who aim to create an immersive listening experience.

The show is acclaimed for its sound design and music, something that is so crucial to an audio medium.

20 Sided Stories is an anthology, meaning that all the different stories are self-contained and unrelated to each other. You can simply find the one that interests you the most and give it a shot. For instance, I started with the series “Victoria 1980.” I really enjoy the twist of the genre and easy to follow rules.

2.Tales from the Stinky Dragon

If you’ve been following any of the All Ages of Geek pages for a while, you’ve most definitely seen that we’re fans of the computer-animated web series, RWBY. RWBY is a product of the media company known as Rooster Teeth.

Tales from the Stinky Dragon is also a product of Rooster Teeth. The crew at RT are no strangers to tabletop, but this is their first go at an actual play podcast.

The plot revolves around four adventurers who travel to intern for a superhero team known as the Inifinights. But of course, things aren’t what they seem, and the adventurers are thrown into an unexpected situation where they may have to save the superheroes they’re interning for. This is a story for people who love the underdog.

I highly recommend checking it out for laughs, as well as charming and unique characters. It’s also especially fun if you’re already a fan of Rooster Teeth.

3.The Broadswords

“The Broadswords is an all women actual play Dungeons and Dragons podcast focusing on role play, narrative, and diversity at the gaming table.” Link

Something unique in the first minute of The Broadswords first episode is that the cast chooses not to do character introductions past names, races, and classes. This is for the sake of immersion. The listener gets to learn about the characters as they go in an organic way.

The Broadswords is like a high-fantasy epic movie that plays in your earphones and comes alive in your mind.

While The Broadswords has now retired, you can find all three of its seasons wherever you listen to podcasts and fall in love with its rich storytelling and diverse characters.

4.Dimension 20

Dimension 20 is the tabletop podcast from Dropout, College Humor’s streaming service. Dimension 20 has many seasons, having just debuted its newe4.st on November 10th of this year, as well as live shows, bonus content, and an animated series featuring artist renditions of amazing moments from the different seasons.

Featuring a wide variety of settings, Dimension 20 has something for everyone. Similar to 20 Sided Stories, it’s various campaigns all have their own unique story and could be enjoyed as a binge listen or on their own.

5.Dungeons and Daddies

Dungeons and Daddies has been recommended to me by multiple of my friends who enjoy D&D. This show centers on “four dads from our world flung into a land of high fantasy and magic in a quest to rescue their lost sons.”

It’s wholesome, it’s funny, and its cast is made up of some amazing talent in the writing, video game, and television industries.

It even recently had a miniseries spin-off that sees the characters land in a different sort of world that they must navigate as dogs (and one cat.)

Of course, this list wouldn’t be complete without giving a shoutout to the D&D podcast hosted here at AAOG– Dice Sesh. Make sure to check it out as well and give our incredible team some love.

D&D can truly be a game for anyone, and podcasts are a fantastic way to explore that. While this list includes a lot of diverse stories, there are even more Dungeons and Dragons podcasts out there for your listening enjoyment. Whether you’re new to the game or an RPG veteran, there’s bound to be something out there for you.
