Avatar Studios’ First Animated Film To Focus on Aang and His Friends

Avatar Studios is hard at work with its first animated feature in the world of Avatar and fans finally know what it will be about. During San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that the first film will feature Aang and his friends. That’s right, the upcoming film will dive deep into the lives of Aang and his friends in the period between The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra.

The announcement of the first film in the Last Airbender universe was unveiled thanks to voice actor Dante Basco, who hosted a panel for the Braving the Elements podcast. Voice actress Janet Varney, who couldn’t make it to the panel, also shared the news on Nickelodeon’s Twitter account. During the panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the voice of Korra herself revealed that the first feature-length movie from Avatar Studios will focus on a young adult Aang and his friends. This excited fans at the convention after the previous announcement earlier this year that three animated movies were in the works by the creators of the franchise. It’ll give more stories to tell with the original characters more than 10 years since the first series ended.

Other than who will be in the movie, no other details were given like when in Aang’s lifetime this would take place or who else would be making appearances. The film is being directed by Lauren Montgomery, who worked on episodes of the original series alongside creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. At least fans will be satisfied to know that they’ll be able to see the likes of Aang, Sokka, Katara, and Toph again.

Avatar Studios was unveiled last year and is being led by DiMartino and Konietzko. The other movies that were revealed prior to the big reveal would focus on Avatar Kyoshi as well as Korra. Outside of these three projects, there is also room for more material to be released within this universe. Since The Last Airbender ended its run back in 2008, there have been comic books and graphic novels that have expanded on the story, offering a closer look at Aang’s adventures after the series finale.

Speaking of comics, it was also announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Dark Comics is currently working on a new standalone graphic novel focused on recurring villain Azula as well as a new comic trilogy focused on Korra. Expect to see these new stories unfold sometime in 2023.

No date has been given for when the first film will be released, but this should keep fans excited for more stories to be told on screen from the Avatar Airbender universe.
